Wakesurfing or wakeboarding: the differences and which to try first
Updated:
The short answer
Wakesurfing is riding the wave behind a boat without a rope, on a board without bindings, at a lower speed. Wakeboarding uses a board with bindings, you stay on the rope and jump the wake. Many first timers choose wakesurfing, while those after speed and jumps go for wakeboarding.
Board and rope
A wakesurf board is short and has no bindings: you stand on it freely and let go of the rope once you catch the wave. On a wakeboard your feet are in bindings and you hold the rope the whole time.
Speed and falls
For wakesurfing the boat goes slower than for wakeboarding. Lower speed usually means gentler falls. Wakeboarding is faster and the wake is used for jumps, so falls can be harder.
Which boat
Wakesurfing needs a boat designed to make a long, clean wave. For wakeboarding a motorboat with enough power will do. At Mazury Przygoda we wakesurf behind the Axis A20 and wakeboard behind the Axis A20 or the Bayliner VR.
Which to choose
First session and you just want to feel the wave: wakesurfing. You have done water skiing or snowboarding and want to jump: wakeboarding. You can also try both in one day.
